Currently in pre-production, The Big One is a deceptively small and extremely lightweight 2-way speaker cabinet containing a 15" woofer and a 6.5" midrange speaker, which can compete in output with typical 6x10" and 2x15" cabs despite weighing less than half as much.

Here's some photos of the pre-production model - we'll be doing some thorough testing to ensure the crossover is doing exactly what we want and we're also adding wheels and another handle to take advantage of its tall slim shape which makes it perfect for wheeling in and out of venues. Look out for updates!

Design specifications:

Dimensions: 29.5" high x 21" wide x 16" deep
Weight: 45 lbs
Sensitivity: Similar to a high quality 2x10"
Frequency Response: Unusually flat response from the deep thick lows to the clear highs
Recommended Amp Power: 200-1000W RMS
Maximum Output: Similar to a high quality 6x10" or 2x15"
Impedance: 8 ohms

How does this differ to The Compact?

  • advanced two-way design splits the sound between dedicated woofer and midrange speaker
  • the woofer has a heavier and stiffer cone, longer voice coil and lower resonance
  • the midrange speaker has high sensitivity and power handling, excellent on and off-axis response and very low distortion
  • computer designed crossover to ensure accurate response
  • larger cabinet volume and higher output, low noise ports
  • even stiffer cabinet construction to handle high internal pressure

What difference does this make in the real world?

  • lower sensitivity - you'll need a bit more amplifer power
  • greater power handling - you can push huge power into this speaker cabinet
  • greater maximum output - louder than seems possible for anything so small
  • deeper thicker fatter bottom - makes all conventional cabs sound thin
  • more extended treble - no tweeter hiss but as much presence, cut and brightness as you want
  • greater midrange clarity - the cleanest punch you've ever heard from a bass cab
  • even lower distortion - the combined effect of a dedicated midrange speaker and a high excursion woofer
  • better off-axis response - closer to the holy grail of identical sound wherever you stand

Anything else?

Although most bassists need the midrange output of either The Compact's 15" speaker or the additional midrange speaker on The Big One, there are a select few bottom dwellers, primarily those of a reggae/dub bent, that just want bass, bass and more bass and have no interest in midrange or treble. As The Big One is so good at bottom we have decided to make it available without the midrange speaker or crossover for anyone who just wants bottom or anyone who likes the colouration of their current speakers but wants to add extra low end, or indeed anyone who already owns The Big One but plays a lot of outdoor gigs and needs even more output (if you need more than The Big One indoors then you have a problem!) Due to the simpler design and reduced component count there is a substantial cost saving.

Let me at it, I want The Big One!
