Welcome to BarefacedBass. We don't claim to build the "Perfect Bass Cabinet" but we have attempted to build the least compromised cabinets for our needs. If you need the same as us - maximum output, minimum weight, plenty of bottom, punchy midrange and clear but natural highs - then these speakers may be almost perfect for you.

The first model that we are making available is simply called The Compact. The aim with this cab is to give you a very easy to carry speaker that can still play seriously loud - no problem hanging in almost any rock band. Because it is so small it doesn't naturally have massive bottom but it won't mind if you crank up the lows on your amp to get that fatness. Thanks to the very latest speaker design we use a single 15" speaker to produce amazingly punchy midrange and just enough treble for clarity - more than many 4x10" cabs.

The Compact

Specifications:

Dimensions: 25.5" high x 19.5" wide x 13.5" deep
Weight: 32 lbs
Sensitivity: Louder than almost any 2x10" cab, close to many 2x12" cabs
Frequency Response: Similar to the classic sealed 8x10" fridge
Recommended Amp Power: 100 - 500W RMS
Maximum Output: Similar to a quality 2x12" or 3x10" cabinet
Impedance: 8 ohms

Ready to travel - one-hand carry!

The Compact

Our second model, which is currently in pre-production, The Big One is a deceptively small and extremely lightweight 2-way speaker cabinet containing a 15" woofer and a 6.5" midrange speaker, which can compete in output with typical 6x10" and 2x15" cabs despite weighing less than half as much.

Design specifications:

Dimensions: 29.5" high x 21" wide x 16" deep
Weight: 45 lbs
Sensitivity: Similar to a high quality 2x10"
Frequency Response: Unusually flat response from the deep thick lows to the clear highs
Recommended Amp Power: 200-1000W RMS
Maximum Output: Similar to a high quality 6x10" or 2x15"
Impedance: 8 ohms

Common to both our designs is the use of very high output speakers with large volume displacement for their weight (the amount of air they can move) and extremely low mass but high stiffness thin panel cabinet designs. We have obsessed over every little detail, from enclosure and port sizing and tuning through internal bracing and dampening to the textured finish which actually further damps any unwanted resonances. All of these work together to give a very clean and clear sound at high SPL. Do not assume that clean and clear equals sterile and boring, nothing could be further from the truth. These speakers are lively and responsive, like driving a sports car not a juggernaut but they can handle plenty of power so if you hit them with some big bottom they will sound huge and fat. Pop a high string and you won't hear a shimmery twang, you'll get all the attack and brightness you could want but also the big fat midrange and thump that supports the note.

You are probably sceptical that our 15" woofers could have such quick responses - here's why: The neodymium magnets on our speakers are very powerful yet the cones are relatively light - this gives a high motor power to cone mass ratio which means that the impulse response is excellent. The downside of this is that the cone is more tightly controlled at low frequencies giving you less bottom - to compensate for this the cabs are very precisely tuned to give you back that missing bottom. The suspension supporting the cone is relatively loose and very low loss which also helps the speaker produce bottom - all the cone control and damping comes from that powerful magnet and motor system - and the low resistive losses in the suspension means that the very finest details of your sound are accurately reproduced, all those little touches of growl, grit, burp and snarl that give your tone character and make it cut through the mix.

Which cab is right for me?

The Compact is aimed at those bassists that are dissatisfied with the output from their 1x12" or 2x10" or the size and weight of their 2x12" or 4x10". Or even the few bassists that are still gigging with a 1x15" but want the greater output and more open punchy tone of a higher quality speaker - and of course the lower weight! Although there are many very compact and lightweight speakers cabinets now available they all suffer from a common problem which is a lack of power handling at low frequencies, usually a fraction of their rated power. Although this does not mean that it is easy to blow these small speakers it does mean that the distortion level increases as you play louder or demand more bottom. This distortion is unlikely to be perceived as actual distortion but as a decrease in punch and clarity or a boominess to the tone. The Compact will eventually suffer this same problem - all speakers do - but at much much higher SPL than any cab of similar weight.

The Big One is aimed at those bassists that are dissatisfied with the output, particularly in the bottom, of their 2x12" or 4x10" or the size and weight of their 6x10", 8x10" or 2x15". It is also aimed at those that really want to hear the details of their tone, maybe if they'd heard their bass through some big expensive studio monitors (the kind that you can feel, not just hear!) and have always dreamt of having that clarity and punch as well as that big clean fat bottom. The Big One also solves that perennial problem of not being able to hear yourself well when you have to stand quite close to your cab by having a midrange driver with excellent dispersion that gets all the clarity and punch up to your ears instead of firing it at your knees.

Anything else?

Yes! We are currently sourcing the parts for a cunning tiltback solution that will not only match up with our own cabs but with any other cabs you may use. The biggest single problem for bassists is hearing themselves clearly onstage whilst having a fat tone out front. This low-cost solution will make a radical difference to getting the critical mids and highs up to your ears!

So where can I hear these amazing speakers?
