Turning up tweeter to near full has transformed sound of cab! I was pretty pessimistic about eq being source of solution to be honest, as Id really been through so many  variations with little joy. You're so spot on about the freq range of the tweeter. It's providing the cut I was looking for, without the need to push the freqs that sounded so nasty through the woofer. I've never seen a tweeter take such gain without sounding like a perpetual hi-hat on every note! I have ebs horn at about 1 o'clock, just a notch of positive boost. The midget tweeter has much broader response. Now the eq changes I make relate realistically to what I'd expect!
Now I'll get into more detailed tweaks, but looking so much better.
Cheers,
Gerry

26/06/2010 - Compact

Arrived yesterday and got a chance to gig it last night.

Had a few problems at first setting my eq as it seemed really echoey, but as soon as the pa kicked in i realised the whole room had masses of natural reverb about it.

Had never played this venue before so kinda knew i may struggle getting a sound, but about 3 songs in and with a bit of tweaking it was sounding pretty good, and as the night went on and i was adjusting to the difference in sound of my previous cabs i was starting to hear how much clarity i actually had (quite a rarity for me!)

Playing outdoors today, and then in quite a big venue tonight, so will have plenty of opportunity to play around with it some more.

Best regards,

Chris.

21/06/2010 - Midget

I've been gigging twice with my midget already...
It's really amazing , fills all my expectations:)
I've played saturday in a mid-sized indoor venue and i decided to try it first with my G&L SB-2. For some reason i had a lot of tweaking to get a hold on my sound , but i managed and could enjoy the punch and power of my midget.
Yesterday i used it for an outdoor gig with the guys i play with the most. I took my Us jazz bass deluxe and my sound was great , but the most amazing was how full and big it got , outside. The other band members went from laughing at this tiny box when i took it out of the car to how amazing it was :p
It's also soooo small and light (i didn t realize it would be that small and light) that i m almost regretting i didn t get a compact , whitch i m already saving for ...
In other words , you kickass!!! I'll spread the word here in Marseille :)
I'd like to get a cover or even a flightcase for it. Are there any companies doing that ?

19/06/2010 - Super Twelve T (HMS)

It works great with the separate volume controls which allows me to blend the sound to my taste! You should IMO find a place on the cab where you can place a warning sign about the volume of this beast :D

I was playing a bit with it today and was using the Boost function and the speakers react very well, there was that small amount of overdrive depending on how hard I was plucking the strings, then I tried a bit of slap with both mids cut about half way, treble and bass were boosted about half way, the woofer was half way and tweeter on 3/4, Boost on full and I can tell you that it sounded absolutely amazing, it's the tone I was looking
for for so long!

IMO the GK heads are the best out there and I feel ashamed that I even considered selling mine! One thing that really doesn't make any sense to me is why other manufacturers don't adopt the bi-amping system! It gives so much more possibilities and it would allow everyone to experience full control over their tone.

I'll let you know when I break the speakers in a little more.

Cheers

11/06/2010 - Midget

Got it home last night – easy carry to the station from work, and again the other end.  Ran it out on its own to start with, and the Midget is one hell of a cabinet!  I couldn’t push it too hard due to noise and neighbours, which surprised me a bit because I thought I’d be able to run it harder than the compact – no chance!!

When I stacked it on top of the compact, other than looking like a monster (knowing the capability of the compact alone), it was silly for home use.  Gain set at 12, boosted the lows a little, and couldn’t get the volume past about 8 O’clock! – about 4-8 clicks in on the volume! Mental!!  So as a rig, I haven’t got a real flavour for it, but the range of tones the amp was providing and the midget was eating, clean and with some overdrive added was impressive.  Going from low, fat and full to mid range crunchy and punchy.  You make superb kit, and I love it!

Thanks again, I’m absolutely loving your bass cabs!!!  Barefaced Rules!

Best regards

Andy

01/06/10 - Compact

I picked up my compact from you just over a week ago so have had the chance to live with it on a couple of gigs, a rehearsal or two and some recording, so a good variety of situations.
I sold my other cabs recently but kept hold of the bigger 4 x 10 in case the compact didn't have the muscle for louder gigs, I just had the gut feeling that due to its small size and feather weight it wouldn't do the job.
Am glad to say I was wrong and will be getting rid of the 4 x 10. All the good things said about your cabs are correct, it had more than enough volume and great articulation, there was more than enough bass end whilst
keeping plenty of detail in the mids and top. The workmanship is great, and is a great piece of design, a true form and function item but it also has that extra hand built bespoke quality.
Your customer service was perfect, and it was good of you to take time out to meet me. Buying backline when you are a working musician is a big decision, a new rig is not cheap and a right or wrong decision is something that you can be stuck with for a long time, but it makes a change buying from someone who really cares about each and every product they make and is not just trying to shift units. I know from what you said that it really matters to you that each customer is getting exactly what he or she needs, and it made me all the more sure that I had gone to the right man. The fact that the Compact you sold me more than lived up to its promise was no surprise, this is definitely a cabinet I will be keeping.
My next step will be to buy a midget from you in the next few weeks, the combination of those two cabs should cover me for any playing situation I could think of, and together I can't imagine how loud they will be. My only difficult decision from now will be whether to go with a tweeter or not.
Thanks a lot, will be in touch
Brad

16/05/10 - Compact

Suffice to say I'm very, very pleased with my Compact.  The sound is great, but the biggest difference to my old setup is definitely the weight.  It's led to one very jealous keyboard player now that his rig weighs twice what mine does!  The silver cloth was a good choice I think: it's good for impressing those that listen with their eyes rather than their ears given that it looks like you've brought some old-school bad-assery with you.  Combined with an RH450 I've found it to have plenty of headroom, with the volume being at the point of overpowering the band with the master at just past 12 o'clock.
Cheers,
Duncan

I'm more than surprised at how light it is! I'm just off to get the speakon cable for it and I'll be gigging it tonight!

Thanks

Update, 11/04/10

So after a while of having my Marshall MB4210, I was pretty happy with the hybrid valve type ampifier, I liked how it was IMO a transparant aplification of my bass.
But although its a cobo its very heavy, and as I dont drive and my band relies on parants to transport our gear around for gigs and practice I quickly got bored of going back and forth to pick everything up.

So began the search to find a light, copmpact, loud, value for money rig.
I wanted a head and cab thing as the option to upgrade parts is nice and its easyier to stuff seperate squares into a small van than one large one. Anyway, I had my mind set on a at least 300w and a decent 2x10. I quickly found that good light 2x10's arnt that common opr cheap. Also i kind of narrowed my head search for harkte Lh500, Orange terror Bass or a GB shuttle 6.0. Although I searched ebay and here and talkbass, I couldn't get a used orange or LH500, and the GB was out of prive range. Then I got stuck, I convinced myself that the Orange wasnt versatile enough and the LH500 was my only option.

Then sudden case of GAS and impulseness struck me while going over ebay.

I saw someone selling an ampeg SVT-3-PRO with a footswitch and inside a LD systems gig carry hard case thing at £450. I messaged him and got him down to 420, which I thought was a brilliant catch. Obviously I did some research on it and 3 pre amp tubes is better than 2 or 1, no? plus I grew up with the sound of mark hoppus and his SVT-4 pro, and if it the 3 is good enough for Robert Trujillo its got to be good enough for me and my amateur needs.

Next was a cab. I dont know why I was being narrow minded about a 2x10. I was looking at all kinds of neo loaded cabs, some still weighing around 20 Kgs, anyway, I thought I'll email barefaced and ask his advice. Amazing he replied in less than an hour. He asked a bunch of questions like my current gear and my bands sound, and my EQ settings, he assured me that the Compact would suit me just fine although the SVT-3 might under power it a bit.

It came the other day and I got it all together and practiced the crap out of it. Im still astonished at the compacts lightness. I dont need my graphic eq pedal no more as i use the Ampegs on board 9 band graphic EQ.

The sound is pretty amazing, I still get the transparant amplification of my bass, with added features, like the low button adds a great sub harmonic to everything. It's true that the SVT-3 pro under powers the compact it but after around 3/4's of master volume it starts to drive the speaker and stuff starts to fall over, stuff in my bathroom fell over, and you can really feel it push the air. The notes are clear and seperate.

I gigged it that night and it was great I could not only hear myself on stage but feel it too. It has great punch in a crowded mix, specially with a double bass happy drummer and two loud guitards wink.gif.

I still find it funny when people think the cab is going to wiegh a tonne. I can walk out the house with the amp head bass and cab in one go, so theres no return trips to the car for me, and my band is back at complaining about the drum kit. I think the only thing i'll need at a later date is another compact to start running the ampeg at 450w at 4 ohm.

---------------------

11/03/10 - Compact

The compact is more and more amazing the more and more i play it.  Cracking piece of kit!  Unfortunately due to the laziness of my current band, I’m still to test it in a live environment, but i reckon this’ll be another two weeks off!

I also just picked up a DHA overdrive pedal which just aids in making this rig sound massive.  I’ve finally pretty much hit my tonal nirvana!.......pretty much.........

....So I was also wondering if you could direct me to any images of a midget compact stack/threads.  I remember seeing a couple a while back before ordering the compact, but I can’t seem to find them again.  It won’t be an immediate purchase due to cashflow, but I’m considering adding a midget to add more aggression, and provide options within a modular rig.  Reckon if i do it’ll be 6 months off or so, but thought I’d start looking and ask the question.

Hope all’s well your end, and thank you again!!

Update 26/04/10

Just finished assembling my lightweight rig, and I’m absolutely loving it!

Set up now is:
Feline Bass (5 string) --- DHA VT2-twin-eq-std --- Genz Benz Shuttle 9 --- Barefaced Compact

I’ve had the components for home playing for a while, and my first proper test was the weekend just gone, managing to get a rehearsal (finally) in with my “band”. I’d managed to dial in so many good tones at home on my own, i couldn’t wait to get it out.

The first test was whether I could actually carry it down the road (admittedly only 1,000 yards to the train station – then another 200 yards the other end). Pretty easy – cab in one hand, guitar on my back, bag of pedals and cables in the other.

I arrived early and set up with the drummer (guitarist was as usual late!) and let rip – this set packs one hell of a wallop. I EQ’d a little on the Genz, added the Extra low pre set to find my sweet spot, and it was tonal Nirvana! This is one hell of an amp in an almost ridiculously small package. I love the tone variety and the wallop it can hit you with.

Throwing in the DHA VT2 to provide some overdrive and fuzz when needed, and the versatility in tone was staggering! Really tubey and aggressive. I love the two tube stages – the first adding a little more bite than the Genz can conjure, the second taking it to a heavy overdrive/fuzz.

The compact just seems to throw out bass – literally trouser flapping!! The low B is the best I’ve ever heard it – articulate, fat, didn’t fade quickly, sounded equal in level to every other sting on the instrument.

When the guitar was eventually brought into the mix, it cut through easily, and kicked the arse out of a Marshall 412 – we’re a pretty loud band, and the guitarist resigned himself to running another amp in stereo to try and boost enough to get our mix right.

I know loudness isn’t what it’s all about, but running a single 15 in such a light weight rig, as well as more than achieving my tonal goals whilst being stupidly loud put the biggest smile on my face!!

What i thought sounded pretty good at home, just came to life in a rehearsal room in a live context. I can’t wait till next time, and to get it out gigging!!

I’m so pleased with each element of this rig, the tone, finish (The pedal and cab are extremely well built, and aesthetically i love their appearance) and the customer service I received from Alex and Dave, I just thought I’d share.

Yeah, picked it up last night, cheers!  Very pleased with the look and the weight, but can't really test out the sound until I gig it this weekend.

07/03/10 - Compact

went to depot to pick up cab on saturday morning.  Must admit its great - light weight and such a good bass response.

will be trying in anger on friday

Update: 21/02/10

I tried the cab out in anger last night and was really pleased. Its so ;ight and easy to transport but teh sound was great.   I dont know how it does it but the bass response was really good. The only problem was that my Markbass amp kept going for a walk and nearly fell off.

Many thanks.

The cab is awesome! Sounds deeper and brighter than the NV610, and maybe has a little more volume in it. I'm playing with an Orange Terror (my amp is being repaired) and I can't push the level over 2! So I'm glad I sold the Berg, I like this even more. Thanks again, it's worth the wait, hehe!

08/06/10 - Midget T

I've now played a few gigs with the Midget T and I like it a lot. Thanks, you did a great job! Did a wedding gig with a 5 piece band last weekend and the cab as a standalone had no problems to keep up. I have to try it with upright bass and noodle around with valve amps, I'll get back to you after that.

Best regards,

Heikki (Finland)

Update: 10/06/10

I like the tweeter. I usually turn them off all the way but this is the first cab I've found the tweeter useful (haven't played many quality cabs w/ tweeter though...). The Midget's tweeter helps to cut through in a loud mix without sounding too sizzly. It adds a nice "bite" to the sound.

Update: 11/06/10

Had a quick valve session last night. I drove the midget with Carlsbro TOP100 and Ampeg V4b Classic (90's version). TOP100 sounded great as it always does. TOP100 + Midget would be great in studio, I really like that combination. V4b wasn't so good, it sounded too grindy (same thing with SVT3pro, btw). Both Ampeg heads worked much better with same brand BSE410H cabinet, classic Ampeg sound. Anyway, I think that a 100w valve amp + Midget would be loud enough for a small/middle sized gig. At least for me, I'm blessed to play with a drummer who has exceptional sense for balance and dynamics :)

A few weeks ago we tried Juuso's Big One with V4b and SVT II. The SVT sounded amazing, it was thick and thunderous. V4b was ok, but not loud enough.

Btw, my wife noticed also that the Midget sounds better than my previous small cabinets. How cool is that?

Best regards,

Heikki

17/05/10 - Midget

I've been playing the Midget a lot so far, and I'm liking it more and more. It brings out the wood and the tone of my upright, and it's very articulate, so it's easier to intonate. The low end is very easy to control from the amp, so even in acoustically bad venues I can achieve a relative good sound. I bought an electric upright from NS Design a couple of weeks ago, that sounds deep (DEEP) even with just the Midget. I get a lot of compliments on that combination.
My electric basses (P and J) sound wonderfull, I just need to turn up a little bass on the amp, and that's it. I've been playing some large outdoor stages, where they reserved a large area for my bass rig. Everyone was shocked that the stuff I brought with me on the first walk was actually everything I had with me. It disappeared on stage, but soundwise I had a very good monitor. Easily loud enough!
When I play in my hometown I can now take my bike, or go by foot, fantastic!
Just for the larger venues without PA support it needs support to fill the room with enough low end. Great that I can use the two Midgets together. I have a gig this weekend to try them out. Looking forward to it.

Thanks. Yes I have the cab. Small enough to take home on the motorbike!!!!

Not tried it out yet as I do not have a speakon lead!!! Will put that right very soon!

Andy :)

Update 09/04/10

Been living with the cab for a few weeks now and I thought I would write to say how brilliant it is. I cannot get over the bass response from something so small... it's very revealing and it made me switch the pickups in my Jazz to something better! It is quite something and the perfect match for my tiny Eden WTX500. Not gigged it yet but excited at the prospect.

Many thanks

10/01/10 - Midget

Sorry for the delay in replying - the festive period is always a bit hectic.

Anyway, The cab is here (it turned up when you said it would), I didn't find any cables in the box so had to wait for a couple of days while I got my local shop to make me one up.  We didn't have any rehearsals over Christmas so I didn't have any opportunities to try it out at a "decent" volume, but I was very impressed with it at a low volume around the house.  Mind you, I am more impressed with the weight - it's amazing!!

We had our first practice this week so I was able to start pushing more power through it.  I was a bit nervous  to see if it would be loud enough and if it could handle the power from the Shuttle 9, but to be honest, when I switched it on in our studio and played that first note it sounded really good.  I removed the pedal board from the chain and cranked the volume, but our guitarist asked me to turn down a bit as the roof was shaking :).  We played for a couple of hours at gig volume, and I found it really hard to stop smiling.  It didn't matter where I stood I could hear myself clearly and I could get the sound to be perfect for me (you also get a big thumbs up from our drummer).  It also moves more air than I thought it would (which is why I had to keep moving around - it was cold air).

We've got a few festivals coming up during the summer so I may come back to you later for a Compact too, just for that nice big rig look more than the sound.

The sound is spot on for me, but I really can't get over the weight though: I live down some of these "untreated" side roads so had to walk for a bit to get a lift to rehearsal (I only fell over once), and it was a doddle - I now have the lightest set-up in the band, and probably the loudest!!

Anyway, good luck with the company, and I hope you had a decent break over Christmas.

Cheers,

AJ    (UK)

Update, 19/03/10:

I hope you remember me, I got a Midget from you at the end of last year (and very happy I am with it too). I'm now looking to add a bit more volume, but I'm not sure whether to go with another Midget or a Compact. I'm running a Genz-Benz Shuttle 9 through the Midget at 8 ohms at the moment but it starts making odd/farty noises when I turn it up above a certain level (so I don't do that). Sometimes though I would like it to go a bit louder. if I add a 2nd Midget then to get any more volume then I will need to run both cabs (at 4ohms). If I add a Compact then would the Compact sound louder than the Midget, and are they compatible if I need monster levels of sound? The amp won't go below 4 ohms, and, according to the literature (and I believe everything that is written down - honest), puts out 900w at 4ohms. Does this all sound OK? I think I've now convinced myself to go for the Compact (if it fits well with the Midget), and use the Compact for small gigs and the both of them for larger gigs where I want to deafen everyone :). Is the lead time still about 1 month? If all this is OK please let me know how to pay you. Cheers, Alan

18/05/10 - Super Twelve T

Sound Quality: 9

Amp: Aguilar SC500
Bass: Musicman Stingray 4 string
Playing style: finger funk, rock & slap
Music: Folk/Trad music crossed with funk/rock style

I have only used the cab over 3 gigs last weekend past, but the one thing that jumped out at me was the various sounds/tone the cab can produce. This thing has everything - Big bass sounds, Subby lows, Punching mid's & Crystal clear highs......all respond instantly at the twist of the eq. Compaired to all the various cabs l have used in the past lt certainly has largest tone range & im told once the speakers 'brake in' l will get even more. I have turned the tweeter all the way up and re-adjusted on the eq. At the same volume setting on my amp the cab puts out more volume to my ear than my pevious Aggy DB410 & Ampeg Classic.

====================

Reliability/Build Quality: 9

The attention to detail on this cab is stunning. Comes with two rubber feet on the front of the cab and built in casters (which are a work of art themselfs) on the back for wheeling the cab about, not that it needs, it weighing in just less than 20kg l was lifting it in and out the car and up stairs no problem. tweeter control is located at the top of the cab vent. The cab being set out vertically aligned has let me hear my sound better than any pevious cab, great shout!

====================

Customer Support: 10

Barefaced got back to me within in hours of my first email enquiring about getting of of his cabs. Throughout the following emails he took the time to work with me to get the right piece of gear for my needs/style. Follow up email came from him after l recieved the cab with a few tips and any help l might need to get in touch with him.

====================

Overall Rating: 9

For my needs this cab has everything, straight up blending bass sounds rite through to Louis Jagger Johnson slap sounds. . . . l make the changes eq wise and its all there. Its going to take a few weeks yet for me to find my sound, esp at the various volume levels im required to play at gig to gig, but lm pretty sure its a keeper.
The other reason l left my previous cab (aggy DB410) which was great, for the Barefaced was the weight and transporting problems l was having, with 4x10 cabs. This cab comes in at 19kg and is easily carryed in one hand or better (if you have your bass on your back and amp rack bag on your shoulder) can be wheeled about on the casters. It is stunning to look at, best looking cab on any stage.

This is just a short review over the weekend worth of gigs l have had, but l will do an updated review in a month or so once l have got more used to it.

10/06/10 - Big One

I have now played with the Big One on a dozen of gigs in different venues. It seems to do the job very well indeed. Still need to fiddle with EQ at acoustically more troublesome venues but it seems to be quite easy. It did especially well on an outdoor gig without PA support. It alone sounded like regular bassgear with subwoofers.

I also compared it volumewise to Ampeg SVT II + 810Classic. Big one (with Ampeg SVT-IIP pre and Powersoft 1kw module) seems to put out almost as much bass and volume. I also tried to get it to sound similar to the Ampeg (which is a very good, usable and ballsy sound) by boosting the 100Hz and 250Hz on the graphic eq and cutting a little treble. It worked out pretty well.

So, thanks for making such a versatile bass cab!

Best Regards,

Juuso (Finland)

07/01/10 - Big One T

Pleased to say it's amazing, still haven't gigged with the cab yet but it's definitely the most obscenely loud and clearest sounding rig I've played through.

I've currently got one of the old Ashdown MAG preamps running through aforementioned Peavey amp into it, really can't fault it, even does an awesome job with guitar for fx heavy stuff. The only minor gripe I have is that one of the metal corners came off almost immediately after getting it, but obviously that doesn't affect the functioning at all and a bit of wood filler will sort that out pretty easily. Apart from that I've found occasionally when I've wanted to plug different amps into it I've missed not having a jack input as well as the speakon connector, so maybe something to consider if enough people want it.

All in all one of the best musical purchases I've made though, kudos to you and all at barefaced!

Davidd

[Barefaced: We have since switched to larger gauge screws to stop the corners coming loose when they get knocked. Replacement screws (and corners if any have been lost) are being sent to all owners so they can upgrade at their leisure]

14/05/10 - Midget + Compact

Just a quick email.  I tried out both cabs together for the first time at rehearsal last night.  I'm deaf this morning :).

I was playing a squier vm jazz through a Shuttle 9. The sound was unbelievable, the tone was perfect. I couldn't stop grinning all night. Our drummer said to say thanks as well (he loved the sound and could hear me no matter what anyone else was doing - damn guitarists lol).  Someone took a photo of the cabs, and I think we recorded the audio last night so I'll see if I can send you a link.  Seriously, it sounds incredible, thank you.

Cheers,

Alan
